What to do with my couch?

This was during a consult. The client was expressing how uninspired the family room felt to her.

If you’re struggiling with your living room layout, it costs you nothing to try repositioning your couch. Go to the hardware store, buy some furniture moving pads and go to town. Heck, even if your current layout is working, you can try something new “just because.” You’ll know it’s right for you when it feels calm. By calm I mean emotionally, yes, but also calm in the sense that it’s not in the way- you don’t have to squeeze past it to get anywhere- the flow of the room is comfortable and you can interact with loved ones easily for conversation and laughter.

A new furniture layout can offer us a new perspective on our space and even on our life. Sometimes we just need to look at things differently to become energized and reinspired.

Should your largest piece of furniture (i.e. your couch) be shoved up against a wall? While there are, of course variables regarding your specific situation and room function, I gotta say that 99.9% of the time your couch needs some breathing room. Simliar to the fear that painting a dark color is scary, many people believe that their room willl feel too small unless the furniture touches the walls. This is not true. In fact, alot of times it is the exact opposite. I can not tell you how many times I have gone into someone’s home, asked permission to make a few changes, respositioned the couch, and the homeowner has thought I performed a magic trick.

I asked if I could move the couch and she could not believe how it made her feel.

“A simple change of view brings calm and new ideas. Five years of looking at the wall was so limiting

My client sent me this beautiful message later the same day after sitting in her couch & being able to look at the nature she loves so much
