Styling A Teen Bookcase

Like with many things in life, the more you do something the more proficient and confident you will become.

I’m experienced enough to know that one size does not fit all, so I’m constantly learning and adapting “on the job.” Even something , seemingly routine, like styling a bookcase is different every time when you’re telling a different person’s story each time.

Here are a few quick tips for you if you want to style a bookcase like a pro.

USE VERTICAL SPACE
This is a biggie for me. The use of vertical space is the first things I notice in a room. With a bookcase, it naturally invites height, so use it to your advantage. Don’t just line books up along the bottom shelves and leave the top bare—let your eye travel upward. Stack a few books horizontally to create little platforms, then place a tall vase, sculpture, or framed photo on top. This draws attention to the full height of the shelf and gives your arrangement dimension. As you’ll notice in the video, the stuffed animals were a great way to add height.

TRIANGLES / GROUPS OF THREE ARE VISUALLY APPEALING
On any given shelf, think in threes. A small framed photo, a favorite book, and a snow globe can form a loose triangle that feels balanced without being too matchy. You can also create triangle shapes by playing with height—stack a few books, stand a taller item beside them, and lean a third piece like a small piece of art or a plate behind. These little clusters keep your shelves from looking flat or overly regimented.

DON’T MAKE IT TOO PRECIOUS
The best bookcases feel lived-in, not over-styled. Let there be a bit of breathing room—every shelf doesn’t need to be packed. Leave space for new finds, and don’t be afraid to tuck in something unexpected. Kids and Teens always have special treasures so it’s a really fun story to tell.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s personality.
