How To Begin Unpacking My New Home ?

There are actually logistical and strategic considerations when deciding where to begin unpacking your home. What all of the professionals agree upon is that unfortunately, you can’t spend the entire first day beautifying your gorgeous custom walk-in closet and still expect the kitchen to magically be ready for breakfast the next morning. Sadly, you’ll need to handle the practical stuff first. However, exactly what those practical pieces are can vary from one person to another. This is what I recommend.

Here’s where I want you to begin:

  • Unpack the Essentials First
Start with the boxes you labeled “essentials” prior to moving. These boxes will include items you’ll need in the first 24-48 hours: toiletries, basic kitchen supplies, bedding, and a few changes of clothes.

  • Make Your Bed
Some people will balk at this, but I am resolute. Most lists say “kitchen” should come first, but I firmly believe in making your bed at the very beginning of the unpacking process. Do it up, make it beautiful. This is equivalent to the “putting your oxygen mask on first” rule. (If mom sleeps great, everyone is happier) At the end of that long first day, your future self will thank you as you walk into your room and are reminded, “Yesssss! I already made my bed,” before you pass out into the best slumber of your life.

  • Set Up the Kitchen (Enough to Function)
Kitchens are the heart of the home and an essential space to make functional in the first few days. However, eating takeout for a night or two while you get your bearings isn’t the worst thing ever. Unless there’s a reason you can’t, give yourself some grace with the kitchen as you figure out what’s going to work for your needs over time. Start by unpacking the items you use most frequently, such as dishes, pots, and pans, and the snack drawer for the kids. Then, play around with where you naturally want items to belong. You may not get it right the first time, but no big deal—it’s all movable.

  • Arrange Furniture
If you were lucky enough to hire movers, hopefully, your furniture is already placed where you want, and your beds are assembled. ) If your need to move furniture not stop reading and go purchase furniture sliders immediately. (They make them for both carpet and hardwood floors.) These will keep you from hurting yourself and damaging your floors as you move furniture around.

  • Prioritize the Bathrooms
Get at least one bathroom stocked and functional in the first 24 hours. Unpack towels, toiletries, and any other daily necessities. A ready-to-go bathroom is crucial after a long day of unpacking.

  • Save the Fun Stuff for Last
Personally, I find all of this fun, but if you’ve yet to have a good time, we’re now at the part where, hopefully, you will. Once the practical areas are set up, you can move on to the more enjoyable parts, like organizing your closet or arranging decor. This is your reward for getting through the less glamorous parts of the process.

Unpacking your new home doesn’t have to be as overwhelming if you tackle it strategically. Only do as much as you can each day without getting angry and don’t push yourself past your breaking point. Start with the essentials to get your family settled, make your bed to create a welcoming space, and then focus on setting up the kitchen and arranging furniture. Prioritize functional bathrooms and save the fun decorating for last. By following these steps, you’ll turn the unpacking process into a manageable and satisfying experience, setting yourself up for a smoother transition into your new home.
