Can’t My Movers Unpack?
We are often asked what to expect when moving companies unpack for you, so I thought I’d share some insights. It is a service that some do offer. While there may be exceptions, this is generally how it goes.
Let’s start off by making clear that professional movers are excellent at their job and I believe everyone should use them. They arrive early, load up all your heavy boxes, drive to your new home, and unload everything with care. They’ll even set up your beds, arrange your furniture, and roll out your carpets—all while working tirelessly, often to the point of exhaustion.
Surface Unpack Example
But after all that hard work, do you really want these same movers unpacking your boxes and handling your belongings?
If you do, be prepared for something called a "Surface Unpack." This means the movers will take your items out of the boxes and place them on the nearest available surface.(Refer to the real client photo for clothing sample.)
Every surface in your home will be covered with your belongings, leaving you to figure out where everything actually goes. Some of your kitchen items will actually end up in the cabinets because they are empty… and a surface. Is this better than having everything stay in boxes? For some, like the client in the photo, it’s overwhelming. She called us in a panic, unsure how she’d ever find the time to put everything away.
While "Surface Unpack" is a helpful service some moving companies offer, it's best used in conjunction with what we at UNPACK provide. Movers don’t know your preferences, your family’s needs, or how you like your kitchen arranged. And they don’t need to—because that’s not their job. Their job is to move you safely and professionally from Here to There, and then their work is done. It’s our job to make your new house a home.
